The General Library of Pope’s college has the vision to create knowledge based students to enhance in lighting India. The Library is growing in pace with the rapid growth and advancement of technology from the form of traditional library to a computerized one. ICT facilities like NLIST, a package of e-resources is activated. In addition to this, every department is furnished with a well-equipped library with reference materials and latest books of their own choice and internet connectivity.
Library Genesis
The General Library of Pope’s College was established on 31st March 1963 with 1000 text books and five periodicals largely donated by Prof. D.S. George Muller, the founder principal of the College.
Mr. Justin D. Rajan was the first Librarian. Prof. K. Paul Dawson was holding the additional charge of the Library for the academic years 1963 – 1965. Prof. R. Jeyam Navaraj took charge of the Library following the transfer of Prof. K. Paul Dawson to Nazareth Margoschis College. Prof. V. Solomon was the Librarian from 28 June 2024 to 28 Feb 2002. From 2002 to 2010, the Library was taken care of by management staff and presently Mr. K. Mutharasan is serving as the Librarian.
The Library was earlier housed in the Main block from 1962 to 2011. When the UGC funded new library building with a carpet area of 3000 sq.ft. was opened on 10th May 2011, the Library was shifted to function in the new building. The New Library building has been aptly named as Prof. D.S. George Muller library in remembrance of his dedicated service to the student community of Pope’s College, Sawyerpuram.

Special Collection:
A collection of manuscripts written by Dr. George Uglow Pope, a Missionary from England who spent many years in Tamil Nadu has been preserved. Dr. G.U. Pope translated some famous literary Tamil masterpieces - Thirukkural, Thiruvasagam and Naaladiar into English. The collection comprises of all the reference books and materials used by Dr. G.U. Pope himself and write – ups done, based on his works.
The collection is preserved in wooden display boxes with glass doors.
Timings:
9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. during working days
9.30a.m. to 4.00 p.m. (Monday to Friday), during vacation
Automation:
The library uses library software to automate the library. All the books have been barcoded and the automation work is going on.
Library Membership & Regulations:
Staff members can borrow five books each and can use for a whole semester
Students are provided with two Library cards each.
Books are lent to students for 15 days of usage from the date of issue including holidays.
Overdue charge of one rupee per book will be imposed per day for late returning of a book.
A penalty of Rs.100/- will be charged for loss of a library card.
Reference books, magazines, journals and dailies are not permitted be taken out of the Library.
