The Department of Economics is the leading faculty in the campus of Pope’s college. B.A Degree course was established in 1966 and M.A course was added in 1987. The department has been upgraded as a research institute to run M. Phil and Ph. D courses from the year 2011-12. The department also offers a certificate course on “Dress Designing” for first year students. God has blessed the department abundantly over the years with doctoral degrees in possession of nine members of its staff. This is an incredible attainment in the outskirt of M.S. University, Tirunelveli.
Staff members of the department
Former staff members and their service records are given as follows: Mr.G.R.Fredrick M.A (Eco)., M.A. (His.) (1962 – 1973); Mr.J.D. Rathnasingh (1968 - 1988); Mr.G Vedamanickam (1967 - 1989); Prof. K. Paul Dawson (1962 – 1970 & (1980 – 1993); Dr. T.Ananda Veda (1967 - 2003); Dr.T.Chibi Chelliah (1980 - 2010). Prof. C. Manickam, the only member in the faculty of History was also seated in the department.
Presently, the following members of staff are working in the department: Dr.D.Jery Josephine Thanaratnam (H.O.D), Dr.J.Jeyasingh, Dr.D.Jeyasingh, Dr.R.Immanuel; Dr.R.Selvakumar, Dr. D.Solomon Raj, Dr.S.Chandrasekar, Dr.S. Henry Pandian, Dr.S.Jesudial Salomi and Mr. I. Ponnusamy (N.E.T cleared member). Four of them have been awarded with research guideship. So far, in the economics department, four candidates have been awarded with Ph.D. degree under the able guidance of Dr. D.Solomon Raj.
Assortment of Activities of the department
During the golden jubilee year all the students other than the first year students were permitted to attend the Bridge Course on General Awareness on Higher Education, Extra- Curricular activities, Scholarship and CBCS System and so on for three days. The I year students were able to attend the Bridge Course conducted by the College for three days in the beginning of July 2011. On the 26th, June, 2011, we sat for a staff meeting for charting out the Year Plan and felicitating the incoming staff members who have completed Ph. D under FDF of UGC. On the 14th, July, 2011, the Staff met at 3pm in the department to plan for the PEOSA (Pope’s Economics Old Students’ Association) meet and for the Inauguration function of the UG and PG Economic Association.
On the 18th July, 2011 the following students are selected as representatives for the five classes: I BA P. Tamil Selvi; I MA K. Gnana Jasmine; II BA M. Subbiah; II MA R. Esakki Raja; III BA A. Jenitha.
We also had the Executive Meeting of PEOSA for the preparation for the conduct of the 9th Annual Meet. On the 22nd, July, 2011, we could inaugurate the UG Economics Association for the year with the Chief Guest. On the 29th, July, 2011, we could inaugurate the PG Economics Association for the year with the Chief Guest. On the 10th August, the Second Executive Meeting of PEOSA for planning for the 9th Annual Meet. On the 14th August, the 9th Meet of PEOSA was held in the Seminar Hall. More than 50 students attended the Meet. Mr. Alagu Sankar, an Alumni and the present Business Magnet was the Chief Guest. On August 28th, four BA final year students attended the State Level one day Quiz Competition in St. Xavier’s College in Palayamkottai and won the third prize. On August 26th, the declaration of starting the Research Centre in our department was received from the M.S.University.
Seven students from I B.A have volunteered to be the scribes for school students who are blind. Five students from I M.A have volunteered to be the scribes for the I B.A literature students who are blind. One of the students of I B.A is disabled and he is helped by many students as scribes for the internal exams. On the 19th of September, 2011, Manjula Devi .T. of III B.A., Economics has participated in Mini Marathon state level sports competition held in Aditanar college of physical education she covered 6 kilo metres. On the 30th September, 2011, Dr E. Manoharan, Associate Professor of Economics, Aditanar college of Arts and Science, Thiruchendur, acted as the resource person in the seminar on’ Testing of Hypothesis’. On the 26th September,2011 two M.A., students attended the residential camp on ‘Yoga, Nutrition and Positive Health conducted at Gramodhya Training Centre, Seidunganallur J. David of II M.A., won the ‘Best Performance’ Award in the camp. On the 4th October four UG students represented the University Hockey Tournament in M.S University. I. Saraswathy of II B.A. won the fourth place in Volley Ball Tournament.
The department was upgraded as ‘Research Centre’ and the inauguration followed by two days National Level Seminar was held during 8.12.11 to 9.12.11.All the P.G students attended the seminar along with the research scholars. Dr. S. Manickam, the Registrar of M.S University inaugurated the Research Centre and Mr. J.J.T. Natterji, the Secretary of the college felicitated the occasion. Dr.J.Sacretees. Dr.T. Anandaveda and Dr.T.Chibi Chelliah felicitated the occasion. Dr. P Arunachalam, Cochin University, Dr. J.A. Arul Chellakumar, School of Economics, Trichy and Dr. J. Sacretees, Department of Economics, M.S. University were the resource persons of the Seminar. All delivered speeches on “Quality in Research”. On the 20th, December 2011, we had the X Mas programme, the Santa Clause visited every class and gave sweets and cakes to all the students of the department. The student strength of the department is 190.
In the beginning of the even semester, twelve students from different classes in our department donated blood through the Blood Donors’ Club of our College. Students got the Rolling Cup in Kabaddi and Volley ball in the final Sports Meet. Students have also won prizes in the Elocution and Skit Competition held under the auspices of the Tamil Mantram of the College. Apart from the academic activities, our department served the society by giving dhotis and sarees to 82 needy people on 18th January.
We had our Students’ Tour for three days (23rd March to 25th March) to Bangalore and Mysore. Along with six staff members, 60 students (both boys and girls) participated in the tour. It was a pleasant surprise to the students as most of them from remote villages and also from the poor community. On the 3rd April, we had the Valedictory function and Farewell to the PG students. The great Industrial Magnet Mr. Ram Viji was the Chief Guest. He has signed an MOU between the department and his concern and as the first token he gave a gift of Rs.10,000 to the department. The department has promised to have training programs for students to prepare for placement. On the 11th April, we had the Valedictory cum farewell function to the UG students. The Director of Suresh IAS Academy. Mr. Suresh Samuel was the Chief Guest. He has also promised to help the outgoing students to guide for their better future.
During the Association Meetings, the students received prizes in different fields of performance both at UG and PG levels.

Three of the Staff members got Ph.D Degree and they are appreciated and felicitated by the members of the staff of the department.
On the 20th April, 2012, all the staff members could sit for the last meeting of the academic year and during that time, the work load distribution for the forth coming academic year was given to each staff member. We ended the meeting with a fellowship lunch hosted by few staff members.
We hope for a better and a new academic year where we enter with the question
“Am I a better teacher than that of the last year?” Praise Be Unto Him and Him alone.
