During the Golden Jubilee year 2011-2012, the Department of English was prepared to give an English Course “SELPO” (Sweet English Learning at Pope’s College)”, for all the new entrants of the college, to bridge them into the medium of instruction of the college. Confirming the vision and inspiration of our Principal Dr. A. Selvakumar and under the able guidance of Dr.S. Pauline Anbuselvi, Head of the Department of English, a “SELPO” course handbook was prepared by Mr. Michael Jeyabalan, one of the Assistant professors of the Department. The Orientation Course conducted for the new entrants with “SELPO” as its main focus was a great success due to the active involvement of all the staff members of the Department and it was appreciated at all quarters.

The Under Graduate Course of the Self-financed stream, the Department of English marched into its second year, and eagerly waited to welcome the new entrants into the Department. Once again the U.G English Course received the over whelming response and got the highest number of students into the First year of B.A. English Literature. The senior students and the staff of the Department gave a grand welcome to the new entrants on 27th July 2011. Prof. R. K. Jacob, former Principal of St . John’s College – Palayamkotai, was the honourable Chief guest and delivered an inspiring motivational address. On behalf of the senior students, Ganga Padma and Samuel Theophilus of II year B.A motivated the new entrants through their motivational speech. A skit, a dance, and games were organised by the senior students to make the programme lively.

Dr. A. Pauline Anbuselvi (Head of the Department), Mr.R.Sellaraj Manuneethi, Dr. J.Christopher Raja, Mr. Michael Jeyabalan, Mr. J. Franklin Peter, Mrs. Bemina Selvarathi, Mrs. Shiny Immanuel, Mrs. N. Shenbaga Priya and Miss. Maheswari form the capable faculty members of the department.

The Spoken English classes and the UGC sponsored Communicative English classes were conducted for the students of our college, enrolled from different departments. The English Language Lab was used for this purpose. Staff members of the Department of English helped in various Students’ service activities. One such notable activity was teaching English for competitive exams in the programme organized by our College namely, “Coaching for Entry in Service”.

The Teaching staff members of the college were honoured by the students of English Department on the Teachers’ Day (September 5th, 2011). The Students wore a badge with slogans, honouring teachers and wished all the teaching staff with a rose and a card, to thank, encourage, and motivate them in their mission of bringing out young leaders of tomorrow.

On 21st December 2011 the department celebrated the birth of Jesus. Mrs. C. Angeline Stella, HOD of Department of Botany was the honourable Chief Guest, and delivered the Christmas message. Our Principal, Dr.A.Selvakumar, graced the occasion with his presence and delivered the Principal’s address. He mentioned that the Department of English is the best in everything they do. Various cultural events and gift exchanges were done to make the occasion memorable. The five blind boys were handed over a shirt each to encourage and motivate them at this celebrations. One of the blind boys, Gladson, of I B.A. performed a classical dance. The blind boys together sang a special song. By the end of the programme, a tableau of the manger scene was set-up on the stage to bring the mood of Christmas and remind us the reason why we celebrate Christmas.

On 28th January 2012, the department of Youth Welfare - Pope’s college conducted the Intercollegiate Talent Contest. Some of the English department students participated and won some prizes. On 24th February 2012 the students’ council day was held. The students of English under the guidance of the staff, enacted some scenes from Marlowe’s “Dr.Faustus” which was a moral with a warning. They added a feather to the Department’s cap by enacting the skit completely in English.

On 10th March 2012, Aditanar College of Arts & Science conducted Dr.B.Sivanthi Aditanar Rolling Cup, inter-collegiate English Theatrics Competition. Our department students participated in the competitions and gained good experience and ideas of how to be creative and correct the mistakes. The staff and students of other colleges congratulated them on being so competitive. On 26th & 27th March 2012, the second year students went on an educational tour to Ootachamund. On 29th March 2012, the first year students went on an educational tour to Kochi. Also the students of the Department of English participated and won prizes in Sports on The College Sports Day. Farewell was given to Mrs. Bemina, by both the students, and the students, as she left the faculty at the close of the academic year 2011-12.
